NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope took a major step toward the cosmos on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, when it was transported from the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility to the SpaceX hangar at Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Encapsulated in its payload fairing, the spacecraft is now being prepared for mating to a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
Liftoff is targeted no earlier than Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026, sending the observatory on a mission that scientists hope will shed light on some of the universe's deepest mysteries.
Roman's science instruments are built to study dark energy — the poorly understood force thought to be driving the accelerating expansion of the universe. The telescope will also chart the large-scale structure of the cosmos, mapping how galaxies form, cluster, and evolve by tracking the gravitational influence of dark matter.
