The unusual saga of Walt Disney World's most expensive failed experiment is finally heading toward a resolution. A recently extended construction permit confirms that work on the former Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser property at 201 S Studio Dr. can continue through August 25, 2027 — giving contractor Balfour Beatty Construction LLC the runway needed to complete the building's transformation.
Disney announced back in January 2025 that the former hotel wouldn't be demolished or repurposed as another guest-facing experience. Instead, the structure will be converted into office space for Walt Disney Imagineering, the creative division responsible for designing Disney's parks, rides, and attractions worldwide. The latest permit extension, issued by Disney's Facility Asset Management team, essentially adds another year onto a permit originally filed in August 2025.
The Galactic Starcruiser opened on March 1, 2022, offering multi-day immersive Star Wars adventures aboard the fictional Halcyon starcruiser, complete with characters, interactive storylines, and live entertainment. Despite genuine praise for its creativity, the experience struggled with steep pricing and low occupancy, and Disney permanently closed it on September 30, 2023 — less than two years after opening. That left Disney holding a highly specialized building that couldn't easily be repurposed as a standard resort hotel.
Work at the site includes removing original theming elements, and a separate permit filed by Walt Disney Imagineering earlier in 2026 covers an adjacent administration building. There's no indication of any new guest-facing attraction planned for the property — this conversion is strictly a behind-the-scenes operational move.
