If you're staying at Pixar Place Hotel at Disneyland Resort this Halloween season, you'll notice something delightfully spooky: an all-new Monsters, Inc.-themed display showing your favorite monsters trick-or-treating in costume, passing candy between their world and ours. The whimsical overlay is the handiwork of Resort Enhancement digital artist Brett Snodgrass, among others — and it was no small undertaking.
The project was a full two years in the making, drawing on collaboration between Walt Disney Imagineering, Pixar, and the Resort Enhancement team at Disneyland Resort. Snodgrass, who has been part of the Resort Enhancement team for more than eight years, said the concept clicked when a fellow team member posed a simple question about what Halloween might look like for Mike, Sulley, and Boo. From there, the theme of trick-or-treating and the iconic doors of Monsters, Inc. became the creative anchor for the entire design.
Staying true to the film was a priority. Snodgrass worked closely with Pixar throughout the process to make sure every character retained their established look and personality, while still feeling distinctly festive. Once the artwork cleared the approval process, printers, graphic technicians, and installers took over to physically bring the transformation to life across the hotel.
For Snodgrass, the most meaningful part of any project comes after the work is done. He has a personal tradition of walking to wherever his art is displayed at the resort — taking in the moment when guests, families, and Disney fans start interacting with it and building their own memories around it. This Halloween overlay, he says, was no different.
