Just ahead of Halloween Horror Nights 35's opening night on August 28, Universal Orlando Resort has brought back its "Deathly Afraid" necklace for the 2026 season. The $20 light-up accessory — first introduced last year — is designed to let guests signal to scareactors that they'd prefer lighter interaction while moving through the park's common areas and scare zones.
The necklace has a new look for 2026: a black strap with red stars and Halloween Horror Nights branding, the words "Deathly Afraid" in red lettering, and a transparent circular medallion reading "Never Go Alone 35th Anniversary" that glows red when activated. It's available at the Five & Dime shop and the Halloween Horror Nights Tribute Store inside Universal Studios Florida.
There are some clear boundaries to what the necklace can do, though. Guests cannot activate it inside any of the event's haunted houses — meaning once you step through a house entrance, you're getting the full, unfiltered experience like everyone else. Universal also notes that accidental scares in busy common areas can still happen even with the necklace glowing. It's less a guarantee and more a polite ask, signaling a preference rather than enforcing a rule.
The accessory has stirred debate among longtime HHN fans, some of whom feel that accepting scares is simply part of buying a ticket to a horror event. Others argue it opens the event to guests who love haunted houses and Halloween atmosphere but find repeated scareactor encounters in open areas overwhelming. Universal's approach leaves the haunted houses completely unchanged while offering a middle-ground option for navigating the rest of the night.
